Closed call: Type 1 Diabetes: Quest For A Cure 2024

The deadline for registration has expired (Tuesday the 2nd of April, 2024 at 13:00 CEST). The DDRF aims to inform applicants within a week after the registration deadline whether they are allowed to submit a complete application or not. 

For whom

The Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation invites all scientists working on type 1 diabetes to apply for a grant in this call. The call is open for both fundamental and applied research. The research can be done at any level, such as cell biology, immunology, patient-driven research, technology, and so on. Main applicants need to be affiliated to a Dutch university, academic centre, university of applied sciences or non-profit research institute.

Focus and objectives

It is essential that the research project is focused on finding a practical or perfect cure for people with longstanding type 1 diabetes within the next 15 years, and should work towards a solution that will eliminate the daily burden of living with the disease. The cure should aim to restore normal glucose metabolism in people with longstanding type 1 diabetes (and prevent the development of complications such as the loss of eyesight, kidney failure, and heart problems). The outcomes of the project need to benefit knowledge users, e.g. people with type 1 diabetes, care providers, policymakers, and companies in the short term and/or in the long term.

We welcome proposals for both practical cures and perfect cures. A practical cure being any solution that will eliminate the daily burden of living with the disease. While it may not fully reverse or eliminate the disease, a practical cure will provide proper glycemic control, and allow people with type 1 diabetes to feel that their life quality and longevity are not compromised. A perfect cure, on the other hand, will fully eliminate the disease and restore normal glucose metabolism.

With the awareness that the field of type 1 diabetes has many different paths that still need exploring, we will also consider research that provides partial solutions for cure for this call. In this case, we ask applicants to elaborate how this partial solution (in the future) can be complemented or completed to obtain a full solution for cure. In this case, it is essential that applicants provide us with a description of a proposed follow-up, who will execute this follow-up, and what the path towards clinical integration looks like, to come to a full solution.

In case of research into adjuvant therapies (i.e. existing medication which can help/improve current therapies), we aim for a shorter route (<15y) towards the clinic.

Available funding

The DDRF aims to support 1 project with a maximum of € 750.000 for a maximum of 60 months.
